Project Zomboid Performance Guide
#1
Project Zomboid is not going to win any accolades for being a well optimized modern game. Its clunky and probably will need intervention from you on your side to make the experience better.
Basic options to potentially help your client side performance regardless of which server if any you are on especially in this case where we have a great deal of mods.

**Basic adjustments.**

1.) Restart your computer. Not just the game itself. This game has memory issues. Best to release what's stored in ram and give it a fresh start.

2.) Reduce or stop applications that are consuming other resources. Google is also a memory hog.

3.) If your using multiple screen, consider reducing it down to just your primary play screen.

4.) Check the in game settings I don't have a specific list here of what to best select. Might chat with others on this server either in game, on the forum, or in discord.  Anything that adds layers to tiles increases memory usage! Turning off rain or blood can help increase!

5.) The UI elements (windows) that render on screen add to game lag. While most of these are extremely useful, if you turn them off temporarily when you need more performance, combat or traveling, you should see additional frames or performance.

**Advanced adjustments**

1.) Increase the amount of memory your system will use for PZ

From this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/...ally_play/

It all depends on your system and how much memory you have to spare. By default PZ is set to be pretty low.

Here is a converter to help you with the exact numbers: https://www.gigacalculator.com/converter...-to-mb.php

I recommend editing BOTH .JSON files. Here are my examples where I made an increase to 8GB. Note my PZ game file may be in a different location than yours.

! Make sure you make a back up of the original files.
! Make sure you save the changes.

- In addition , you may want to consider adjusting this file "ProjectZomboid64.bat".

**2.) Better FPS MOD**

While you can subscribe to this mod IT IS NOT automatic. You'll need to read the mod page for what it does and how to install it. Its not difficult.

! BUT AGAIN. Back up your original files.

# PLEASE NOTE

Since the two options above modify core game files, If you run steam file validation on the installation of Project Zomboid these will get reset to their default values resulting in performance loss. There is nothing wrong with validating the files its just important to note that you may want to check these every now and again to see if they are still set the way you want them. Especially if you suddenly experience performance issues.

- In addition , you may want to consider adjusting this file "ProjectZomboid64.bat" to match the ram values you set on the .JSON files. look for the "Xmx" value. Max ram allocation.

Here is the file and and example with 12GB given as a max overhead value. You may not have that much ram to spare so please take note of your computer specs before you  just set these values.
